The village shaman refers to the Sankara stone as Shiva linga. In traditional Hinduism, the linga is a tall, cylindrical stone representative of a phallus, often set inside a circle representing the yoni, or female organ.Together, the two symbols stand for the dualistic sexual energy of the god Shiva.
Mola Ram is the name of the Thuggee high priest in the movie. I dont know if the Sankara Stones are actually part of Hindu myth, but Hindus do worship sacred lingas like the stones in the film. Mount Kailash was the fabled home of the god Shiva, and the lingas are also representative of it. The Thuggee cult in the film is inspired by an actual secret society of thieves and murderers that operated in northern India until the early 19th century, but the movie takes great liberties with the facts. Temple of Dooms Thuggee cult is more a pastiche of various occult practices from fact and fiction. ![]() The Thugs did not rip out peoples hearts and lower them into lava pits like in the movie. Instead they preyed upon unsuspecting travellers, befriending their victims before strangling them with scarves. The Thugs would rob their victims, then bury the corpses in pre-dug graves. The Thugs worshipped the Hindu goddess Kali and claimed their crimes were motivated by her will. Kali is sometimes worshipped with blood sacrifices, mostly from animals, although there are theories that humans may have been sacrificed in ancient times. However, the Thugs had both Hindus and Muslims as members, and some say it was a band of foreign Muslim that first formed the group. The Thugs perfected the art of strangling, as killing without shedding blood was deemed a great show of skill. Once one took an oath to be a Thug, they were to stay obedient to the group until death. ![]() The British played up the legend of the Thugs for their own agenda and used the dismantling of the secret society to justify their civilizing presence in India.
